Traditionally called Uluru, Ayers rock is a 348 m high sandstone formation that extends a few kilometers into the round. With a circumference of 9.4 km it is the worlds largest monolith and is found in central Australia. It lies in the southern part of the northern territory and is 335 km away from Alice Springs, the nearest large town. The area around the rock has many waterfalls, springs, caves and ancient paintings making it extremely sacred to the aboriginal community living in the national park. It is classified as a World Heritage site and there is large controversy between opposing groups about the use of the rock for tourism and the cultural importance to the which began in the 1950's and has continued up to the present day.
